On May 8th, students with City of Promise visited the UVA Medical Center for hands-on learning about anesthesia and surgery. City of Promise is an organization focused on coaching, mentoring, tutoring, and goal setting for underserved children in the community. They are committed to making a positive impact on generational poverty here in Charlottesville. At Walker, Buford, and Charlottesville High School, City of Promise supports students in school and in the community, connecting them to extracurricular activities and complementary resources.

The first part of the day was spent in the Simulation Center where they got to interact with the OR simulation mannikin and learn how to prepare patients for surgery. They got hands-on practice intubating and ultrasounding. The second part of the day was spent touring the perioperative surgical home, interacting with the multi-disciplinary OR family.

Pictured are students learning how to intubate, scrubbing for surgery, and learning about echocardiography. Many thanks to Victoria Bailey, Emmad Kabil, Paul Gallo, William Manson, and Judy Benes for showing the students the world of anesthesia! And a special thank you to Dr. McNaull for doing a solo morning in OPSC so that Dr. Kabil could participate!

UPCOMING JEDI EVENTS

On June 18th, JEDI will be pairing with Starr Hill Pathways, a college and career pipeline program for students from 7th grade through high school graduation. During middle school years, Starr Hill Pathways scholars are given the opportunity to explore different career pathways through summer camps and school-year programming days with community partner organizations. JEDI will be hosting these scholars for hands-on learning about anesthesia and surgery in the simulation center using state of the art mannequins and equipment. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please sign up using the Qualtrics survey linked here.
